Course Outline:        Lesson 1:  What is Large Animal Rescue?  There is established protocol for safely working with large animals, and we'll explore the field of Large Animal Rescue in the first lesson.  You'll learn what it is and what it is NOT.        Lesson 2:  Working with Emergency Responders.  Even though the job of responders is to help in emergency situations - and we see them responding to animal incidents such as cats stuck in trees - their training focuses on humans and they don't know how to work around large animals.  This lesson will introduce you to their world and help you to understand how to interact with them.        Lesson 3:  Scene Safety.  The scene of an accident or other life-threatening incident is volatile and very dangerous.  Learn what to look for and how to protect yourself and others.        Lesson 4:  Getting Your Horse of Out of Trouble.  Horses are like thousand pound three year old children.  If they CAN get into trouble, they WILL!  The most common incidents are accidents involving trailers, and falling into something - a well, a ravine, a swimming pool.  This lesson will focus on the ways to safely remove your horse from entrapment.       Lesson 5:  Barn Fire Safety.  There are ways to mitigate - or prepare for - disasters such as a barn fire.  This lesson will show you how to make your barn safer and how to respond to a barn fire as safely as possible.       Lesson 6:  Safe Trailering.  Here again, mitigation is important.  If you are knowledgeable and experienced when you get behind the wheel, you are less likely to have an accident.       Lesson 7:  How to Tie Emergency Harnesses and Halters.  This lesson will show you, step by step, how to tie an emergency halter and a lift harness, information you may need to share with emergency responders at the scene of a large animal incident.      The book, Save Your Horse! a horse owners guide to large animal rescue is required reading for this course.  You may order the book from www.redjeansink.com at a cost of $24.95 plus shipping and applicable taxes.  Shipping is $7.50 priority mail, $12 to Canadian residents and $14 to other foreign countries.
