Leg Yielding |
Once a horse is responding to inside leg pressure (tipping his
nose into the direction of travel, two-tracking, starting to side pass) it is
easy to teach the leg yield. As you are moving on a circle to the right,
for example, use your right leg just behind the girth to push the horse to the
left. The horse should already have his nose tipped to the right, and you
don't want the horse to change that bend, you simply want the horse to bend around
your leg and move to the left while maintaining the arc to the right.
Leg yielding is an excellent way to increase a horse's suppleness. It is
a not a big movement, but a subtle movement which helps to keep a horse from
straightening his body, allowing his shoulders to fall into any turning action. Take the online course: Training Performance Horses |
